Francis Ngannou came close to pulling off the biggest and most outrageous shock in spins boxing history just after midnight on Saturday in Riyadh spins
Ngannou had never once fought as a boxer, but for 10 rounds he bullied, pushed, clubbed, hit and dropped the unbeaten world heavyweight champion, Tyson Fury spins
At the end of the contest, Fury won a controversial split decision to remain unbeaten, but his bruised and bloody face was harsh and undeniable testimony to the success Ngannou had throughout the fight spins
It was called a freak show, a circus event and the carnival fight was meant to be an easy night in the ring for Fury; at ringside, the other unbeaten heavyweight champion, Oleksandr Usyk, was waiting with a smile on his face and his contract for a fight with Fury in his pocket spins
He was not smiling at the end spins
The plan had been for their $100m unification fight to be back in Riyadh in late December; that date has not yet officially been dropped, but it is seriously unlikely spins
Fury was exhausted and heavily marked on the left side of his face: the champion looked stunned when the fight was finished, just as he looked stunned a dozen times during the action spins
“I need a long, hard break,” Fury said spins
He also praised Ngannou and was, thankfully, respectful in victory spins
There was a sense of true bewilderment in the packed ring at the end – I know, I was in the mix spins
“I have told him to go away, take a break and to not even think about spins boxing,” added Frank Warren, Fury’s promoter spins
It is clearly what Fury needs spins
A decision on the date of the Fury vs Usyk fight will be made in the next week or two; it will be in Saudi before the end of March spins
It will happen, but Ngannou has pushed it back and also put himself in prime position to fight the winner spins
Fury was knocked to the canvas during the third round (Getty)In the ring, Ngannou was magnificent and controlled and never once flustered by anything that Fury did spins
The smart thinking before the first bell was that even a slow, heavy and unmotivated Fury would simply know too much for a man having his very first spins boxing match spins
Ngannou, who has lost three of his 20 fights on the mixed martial arts circuit, stuck to spins boxing’s absolute basics and Fury was unable to solve any of the problems that his novice opponent posed spins
Sure, it was a great performance from the Cameroonian-French fighter, but Fury was very poor spins
In round three, Fury was caught with a looping left hook and sent tumbling, dazed and embarrassed to the canvas spins
It was not a fluke punch or a wild swing; Ngannou was in charge of the pace and he was picking his punches with care spins
Fury was ragged and often held with a desperation that was hard to believe spins
Ngannou kept the pressure on for the entire 10 rounds and Fury never managed to take full control of the fight spins
Fury never hurt Ngannou, he never once made Ngannou look like a novice spins
It was hard to watch at times and difficult to absorb what was happening; Fury clearly had no idea how to deal with the man he had deeply underestimated spins
There must be a full inquest inside the swollen Fury team spins
In the second half of the fight, as Ngannou slowed, Fury had some success with a flicking jab, but he was still quick to hold spins
Ngannou ignored the big rights that connected with his chin and head spins
The later rounds were closer, slower and three or four could have gone to either man spins
Fury will now need rest after his 10 rounds against Ngannou (Getty)Fury was having his 35th fight, he is generally acknowledged as the best heavyweight of his generation, and some have even claimed he is one of the top five heavyweights in history spins
However, in the ring against Ngannou, there were very few recognisable parts of any fighting version of Fury the world heavyweight champion; he fought like a novice and often looked like he was uncomfortable under pressure spins
And Ngannou did put him under pressure spins
At the final bell, there were no great celebrations from either man, no mad scrambles to raise a fighter high on shoulders spins
They were both exhausted, their teams drained spins
It was a split decision; one vote of 95-94 for Ngannou and a 96-93 and 95-94 for Fury spins
There was relief, not joy on Fury’s face at the end spins
Ngannou just shrugged spins
He had been a gentleman all week spins
“I came up short today,” Ngannou said spins
“I will fight on spins
I will get spins better spins
” He never once complained that he had been robbed spins
In the ring at the end, there was a stare-off spins between Fury and Usyk, but it never looked like either man was committed to the ceremony spins
Fury had a bad night, Ngannou the finest of his fighting career; Fury will never be that bad again and hopefully, at some point next year, Ngannou and Fury will do it all again spins
It was not a circus fight, but it was a carnival in Saudi Arabia spins

There’s a new look about a key area of the team for Liverpool, a changing of the guard enforced by recent events, a previous zone of consistency now faced with uncertainty spins
No, we’re not talking about midfield - that particular switch-up already looks a definite upgrade, even early as it is for such conclusions spins
Instead it’s at left-back the unexpected alteration has occurred, a consequence of Andy Robertson’s need for surgery which means the Scot is out for the rest of the year spins
Having averaged over 44 appearances a season for the Reds since signing in 2017, he’ll now miss at least 17 matches, if best estimates of his return are to be believed spins
That leaves not just a gap for Kostas Tsimikas or an untested youngster to fill tactically, but a void which cannot be accounted for: that of a partnership, of understanding, of the natural, unthinking knowing which comes with playing hundreds of matches alongside a teammate spins
It can be argued that such a changeable nature can be applied not just to the midfield, not even just to left-back, but to the entire defensive structure this term at Anfield: injuries have already hit on the right and centrally too, to go along with the altered personnel ahead of them in the middle third of the pitch spins
All that simply means one truth must be constant if the Reds are to translate early season promise into longer-term capacity to challenge for major honours: Virgil van Dijk must once again prove himself to be among the very best, not just individually as a defender but as a force to make the whole greater than the sum of its parts spins
RecommendedBuild from the front? Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp are repeating an old trickEngland’s Euro 2024 squad: Who’s on the plane, who’s in contention and who has work to do?Virgil van Dijk will show he is Premier League’s best once more – Sami HyypiaThere cannot be much debate that the Dutchman, now club captain at Anfield, has not quite reached the same levels of authoritative performances as he did pre-ACL injury, or at least not on as regular a basis spins
The period which saw Liverpool win both Premier League and Champions League saw Van Dijk at the pinnacle of the game, a central defender without peer, a worthy recipient of the Ballon d’Or itself, had he been handed it instead of a runner-up spot, pipped by seven votes in 2019 by Lionel Messi spins
Perhaps that in itself was a noteworthy award spins
In any case, he’s not quite there these days, not quite the automatic choice among fan or pundit asked to name the world’s finest spins
It’s arguable that there isn’t a single stand-out candidate right now for that particularly subjective title spins
But in asking whether Van Dijk is capable of being the world’s best defender again, part of the answer has to be that it doesn’t really matter spins
He might want to be of course, might already believe he is, but from a team perspective what they really need is Van Dijk’s ability to stabilise the team, to foresee and forestall danger, to order those around him to bring forth resilience from chaos spins
Because chaotic is, still, a little too close to the truth when it comes to spells of defending for Liverpool spins
The midfield is far more creative, far more offensive and energetic, far less reliant on Trent Alexander-Arnold always being at his best spins
But all that comes at a cost: it’s not always the most agile and defensive-first in either recovery or positional terms spins
It’s still new as a group, still needs time to become as cohesive as the best central trios are, on and off the ball spins
And in the meantime, the result can often be large gaps, lost runners, moments of inexplicable choices in possession spins
That leaves a hefty weight on the defence to counteract such moments - the defence and, of course, the still-magnificent Alisson Becker behind them spins
(Getty Images)But before that one-man last line, it’s Van Dijk who must rise once more to ensure unity, if not always outright unison spins
Acting in perfect harmony is difficult enough with four constant selections; as it is this season, Jurgen Klopp has already utilised Jarell Quansah as a fifth-choice, following injuries spins
Alexander-Arnold missed pitch time and is not yet back to his peak physical or technical best spins
Ibrahima Konate and Joel Matip have dovetailed, and now there’s Tsimikas present on a more regular basis - which also means either Joe Gomez will see minutes on the left, or an untried youngster will, with Calum Scanlon and Luke Chambers first in line spins
They presently tally one senior minute spins between them spins
They will all four need guiding for different reasons, all need time, all occasionally get things wrong and need the left-sided centre-back beside them to bail them out spins
No prizes for guessing who that is on a week-to-week basis spins
Because for Liverpool, there are prizes at stake spins
Three points off the top of the Premier League table after a fine opening quarter of the campaign; rolling along nicely in Europe and domestic cups alike spins
spins Between now and the next international break, the opportunities for victory across all competitions are as immense as the potential cost of dropped points: Toulouse twice, Nottingham Forest, Bournemouth, Luton, Brentford spins
A modern title-competing team would take six wins with very little fuss, in truth spins
Then, beyond, it’s Manchester City away spins
The most true barometer of where Liverpool are this season, even coming after an international break and in the infamous 12:30pm kick-off spot spins
The margin for error remains almost nil, but with the reigning champions perhaps not quite at their own peak yet, and Klopp’s side having improved more than might have been thought possible at this early stage, thoughts of a title challenge will not be far away - if the defence is kept on-point, even with altered personnel spins
(Getty Images)It all means Van Dijk must be as close to his own 100 percent as possible, even if his 2023/24 maximum level is a little lower than in 19/20 spins
As far as transformative figures go, Van Dijk was one after signing spins
He, as much as anyone else and more than most, sent Liverpool from challengers to champions, in every competition across the board spins
Now once again he must be the leader - literally, given the armband - who enables the Reds to do so, not so much the new figurehead this time but as the standard-bearer, the supplier of consistency, the model of outperformance which can give Liverpool the extra edge they’ll need, both in the Premier League and beyond spins
